About Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, the largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat, is a major commercial and cultural hub with a population of approximately 7.8 million people as of 2023. Located on the banks of the Sabarmati River, Ahmedabad is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and significant contributions to India’s economy.

Ahmedabad experiences a hot semi-arid climate, with extremely hot summers, a monsoon season, and mild winters. The best time to visit Ahmedabad is from November to February when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for exploring the city.

The city is served by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, located about 9 kilometers from the city center. The airport offers direct flights to major UAE cities such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with airlines like Emirates, Etihad Airways, Air India, and IndiGo providing convenient travel options for UAE residents.

Ahmedabad’s cuisine is a delightful blend of traditional Gujarati flavors and diverse influences. The city is famous for its vegetarian dishes, such as dhokla, khandvi, and thepla, which are enjoyed for their unique taste and texture. Street food is also a highlight, with popular items like pav bhaji, fafda, and jalebi widely available. The city is also known for its sweets, including the iconic Gujarati dessert, basundi.

Tourist attractions in Ahmedabad showcase its historical and cultural richness. The Sabarmati Ashram, once the residence of Mahatma Gandhi, is a significant historical site that offers insights into India’s independence movement. The Bhadra Fort, with its beautiful gardens and ancient architecture, provides a glimpse into the city’s royal past.

For architecture enthusiasts, the Adalaj Stepwell, an intricately carved structure, and the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, famous for its exquisite stone latticework windows, are must-visit sites. The city’s old quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its historic havelis (traditional mansions) and bustling markets.

Nature lovers will appreciate the serene Kankaria Lake, which offers boating, a zoo, and various recreational activities. The Kamla Nehru Zoological Park, located within the lake complex, is home to a wide variety of animal species.

UAE nationals who have previously obtained an e-visa or a regular paper visa for India are eligible for a Visa-on-Arrival when they visit India again. However, this facility is not available to those visiting India for the first time, who must instead apply for an e-visa or a regular visa. To obtain a Visa-on-Arrival, eligible UAE nationals need to fill out an application form (Annexure I), which can be downloaded and completed in advance or filled out upon arrival in India.

Transportation to Ahmedabad City Center from Airport

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Intl. Airport

Many transportation options are available, including:

Taxi

Taxis are available at the exit of the arrival area of Terminal 1. It is advisable to negotiate and agree on the fare with the driver beforehand since some taxis do not have taximeters. For a more reliable option, you can request a prepaid taxi from the counter inside Terminal 1 or use ride-hailing services. Travel time to the city center varies depending on traffic conditions but generally takes around 20 minutes.

Car Rental

Car rental companies operate within the arriving passenger area of Terminal 1. Due to heavy traffic and varying adherence to traffic rules in Ahmedabad, it is often recommended for foreigners to rent a car with a driver. It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the city center under normal traffic conditions.

Bus

Several bus routes operated by Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) and private companies connect the airport to the city center. Routes 105 and 101 travel to Lal Darwaja Bus Station, while routes 16 and 06 go to the main railway station. Travel time can vary due to traffic conditions. Buses can be crowded, so they may not be the best option for travelers with heavy luggage. Passengers can transfer from these stations to reach other parts of the city or nearby regions.
