Lugano is located on the shore of Lake Lugano, on the border of Switzerland. The city is part of the Canton of Ticino. Lugano, Switzerland’s ninth largest city, is the largest city in the Canton of Ticino. According to historical documents dating back to 804, the original name of the city was ‘Luanasco.’ The first historical document in which the city is referred to by today’s name was in the year 1189. There are two rumors about the city’s present name. One of the rumors states that the name of the city is derived from the word Latin word ‘lucus’ meaning to protect, or the word ‘lakavannus,’ meaning ‘living in the lake.’ The country is the third largest financial center after Zurich and Geneva. Banking and insurance are highly developed sectors. There are also textile, machinery, chocolate, and tobacco factories in the city. In 1956, the first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Lugano. With its casinos, hotels and restaurants, the city is similar to Monte Carlo’s Switzerland. Lugano, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, is the largest Italian-speaking city outside the Italian borders.

It is known for its watches, chocolate and pizza. The city, which houses many museums, is also famous for it annual Jazz Festival and Wine Festival. Lake Lugano, located between Lake Maggiore and Lake Como in the south of the Alps, interesting for sightseeing with its scenery, natural texture and specially designed bicycle tracks that intrigue tourists. Through the funicular systems, the high points of the city, Monte San Salvatore, Monte Bre and Monte Lema, offer unique panoramic views. Belvedere Gardens, Ciani Park, tassino Park, San Grato Botanical Park, Lugano Cathedral, Mary’s Church of Angels, Piazza Della Riforma (city square) and Swiss Miniature Village are the main sightseeing centers of the city. Lugano is hot and has temperate climate. The Lugano-Agno Airport is located approximately 4km west of the city.
